Science Council rebrand

The Science Council is a membership organisation that brings together a broad spectrum of societies and professional bodies from throughout the sciences to focus on the education, skills and professionalism of the science community. The organisation wanted to refresh its brand to reflect the broad scope of its activities.

Challenge:

To truly reflect the organisation’s mission, brand values and vision.

Solution

We designed a new brand identity and developed a flexible brand architecture of sub-brands. Our primary concern was that stakeholders understood the relationship between the organisation and its activities, in particular its professional registers: Chartered Scientist, Registered Scientist, Registered Technician, and Chartered Science Teacher.

First, we developed a logomark for the Science Council, a multi-faceted graphic – layers of overlapping rectangles that represent both the collective nature of the organisation and its different sectors (science, technology, engineering and maths). The typography and colour of the original brand identity looked more to the past than the future. So, we selected a modern typeface and a bright and bold colour palette – fresh, modern and accessible.

Second, we developed identities for each professional register so that each one was consistent with the type style and colour palette of Science Council’s overall brand identity.

We continue to support the Science Council, recently building their photo library and working with production company Skylark Media to produce a series of videos.

Extending the brand – Technical Education

Alongside the core rebrand, we worked with the Science Council to develop a distinct visual identity for its Technical Education workstream. This programme supports awareness and progression routes into science careers through T Levels and apprenticeships – encouraging applications, showcasing learner journeys, and helping young people begin their journey towards professional registration.

To engage a younger audience, we created a deliberately different look and feel – darker, more dynamic and expressive – under the strapline Igniting Your Career. The identity was designed to sit confidently alongside the parent brand while having the energy and clarity needed to attract and motivate early-career learners.

The work included a series of printed leaflets and promotional materials, alongside a dedicated website to support outreach, engagement and use in educational settings.
